Service-Learning Experience:
Battle of the Books

During fall 2011, I took an adolescent literature course with a service-learning component which allowed me to work with a librarian to identify, plan, and organize teen programming. Five of my peers and I organized a literary trivia event for teens at the Zachary Branch Library titled "Battle of the Books." The trivia questions were pulled from popular adolescent novels, such as The Hunger Games, Harry Potter, and Eragon.

Weeks of organizing and a well-conceived publicity plan paid off. More than sixty people participated in the event. Both parents and students enjoyed the free event that was educational with a healthy sense of competition. My experience and interaction with the participating teens reinforced my belief that every child, despite socioeconomic circumstances, deserves a superior education and the opportunity to enjoy learning.
